Hot! How to Protect Your Floor During a Painting Project

Not all drop cloths are made equally, and during an interior painting project, you’ll definitely need a good one.  Read on for Drop Cloth 101: Protecting Your Floor During a Paint Project

  • Choose quality. Heavier drop cloths, like those made from canvas, have a stronger weave and offer better protection than plastic or paper drop cloths. Plastic drop cloths are also slippery, and are not reusable.  Canvas drop cloths can be washed and used again and again.
  • Prep the room. Before laying your drop cloth, sweep or vacuum any loose debris.  If you skip this step, you risk scratching the floor as you walk over the drop cloth.
  • Fold, don’t cut. If your drop cloth is too large for the space, fold it to fit instead of cutting it.  When you cut a drop cloth, you risk the fabric fraying at the ends. These loose threads could get into your paint, disrupting the finish.
  • Tape it down. While you have your painter’s tape handy, use it to tape down the corners of the drop cloth. This will ensure full flooring protection.
  • Protect more than the floor. When painting inside the home, you often have more than just the floors to worry about.  Use drop cloths to cover any furniture that was too large or heavy to move out of the room.

With these simple drop cloth pointers, you’ll be on your way to a clean painting project.  If you’d rather not go at this alone, contact the Harrison Painters at CertaPro today at 914-777-1314.
