I was looking through houzz.com recently and came across some really cool floors. I thought I would share them with you, along with some interesting facts about the different flooring materials.
What Is Linoleum, Anyway?
When most clients I talk to use the term “linoleum,” they usually actually mean sheet vinyl. Linoleum, invented in 1835, is actually made from linseed oil and other miscellaneous materials. It’s considered more old-fashioned than vinyl, but it’s making a comeback because people like that it is a natural, sustainable product. And you can get it in some great colors. Here is a neat example of some linoleum.
Why Is Cork Good for a Basement?
Cork is a popular flooring material in a basement for a number of reasons. It is a natural sound dampener, which is great because the open space in a basement can be echoey with some flooring materials. It is also warm and a natural insulator, which is good because the subfloor is often cement. It is also soft and forgiving underfoot. Ever Thought of a Woven Grass Rug?
Now this is cool! A sisal (woven grass)/wool blend makes a classic, elegant-looking area rug. In addition to sisal, wool can be blended with many different types of natural fibers, including seagrass, coir, and jute. Rugs made from natural products should only be used indoors in dry areas, as the fibers are naturally absorbent.
